A TAXI DRIVER

Korea’s 2017 entry to the Academy Awards and No. 1 on many Best of 2017 lists.

In this powerful true story set in 1980, a down-on-his-luck taxi driver from Seoul is hired by a foreign journalist who wants to go to the town of Gwangju for the day. They arrive to find a city under siege by the military government, with the citizens, led by a determined group of college students, rising up to demand freedom. What began as an easy fare becomes a life-or-death struggle in the midst of the Gwangju Uprising, a critical event in modern South Korea.

MACARIO

The 1960 Mexican Dia de los Muertos cinema classic.

Poor, hungry peasant Macario longs for just one good meal on the Day of the Dead. After his wife cooks a turkey for him, he meets three apparitions, the Devil, God, and Death. Each asks him to share his turkey, but he refuses all except Death. In return, Death gives him a bottle of water which will heal any illness. Soon, Macario is more wealthy than the village doctor, which draws the attention of the feared Inquisition.

Based on a story by B. Traven and featuring stunning cinematography by the legendary Gabriel Figueroa, Macario stars Ignacio López Tarso, Pina Pellicer and Enrique Lucero. Spanish with English subtitles.
